The PictoScanner app turns any smartphone into a scanner. The principle is based on a photographer’s light table, the LED backlight diffuses an equal light across the whole negative or 35 mm slide. The PictoScanner is fun and can be set up in seconds. After many tests aiming at the quality I was looking for, I finally created the PictoScanner and I hope that this small and simple tool will allow people to revisit their memories endlessly,” said Simon Lautrop about his invention. Smartphones have impressive cameras, so I decided to see if this could be useful to create my mini scanner. “I wanted to create a device that would let everyone rediscover and enjoy their old photos. Simon began a long process of digitising all the old photos but wanted to make it easy for others that didn’t have photography equipment. When Simon’s mother passed away, he was left with boxes overflowing with old negatives and film: memories of his mother and his own childhood. PictoScanner was created by Danish photographer, Simon Lautrop, as a response to the challenges of digitizing old photographs simply. Pictoscanner is a simply brilliant way to digitise images from film negatives, ideal for families with drawers full of forgotten images and a great last minute father’s day gift. At the same time, the lockdowns have made many people nostalgic over thoughts of family and friends. Many people have taken up new hobbies over the last year or used the time to organise and declutter their homes. Purposefully low-tech, it is a carboard, AA battery-powered backlight that uses a smartphone camera and simple app to scan and digitise negatives and slides. Created by a Danish professional photographer, PictoScanner provides an easy way to bring old photos back to life. Now available in the UK and Ireland, PictoScanner is a portable scanner that turns negatives and slides into digital images using any smartphone. Portable Smartphone Scanner Pictoscanner makes turning your old negatives into beautiful digital images really easy

Protect Your Eyes with Ocean Waves Sunglasses If silver lenses aren’t the look you’re going for, then pink/red lenses also reduce eye strain and improve visibility and depth. They are also very popular among women since they are not really seen as colored lenses. Having the darkest tint with highest available light reduction makes our polarized sunglasses great for when you're on the open ocean. These lenses also provide truer color perception while minimizing glare. In addition to reducing eye strain and fatigue, the grey/black color of the Silver makes it a great pair to wear in all weather conditions (even those sudden Florida rainstorms). According to Ocean Waves’ wearers like Lifeguards and Fishermen, say the Silver has helped them find some relief from both light sensitivity and relief from full sun fatigue. They are extremely relaxing to the eye and are great for people that are out in the sun all day. Our silver lenses are the darkest on the market and only let in 8% light transmission. Of course, the best fishing sunglasses pair for you will depend on where you plan to mostly spend your time on the water. Ocean Waves Sunglasses come in a variety of colors, but for our silver lenses are the best to reduce eye strain. The Best Fishing Sunglass Lenses Color for Reducing Eye Strain To protect your eyes and reduce eye strain, make sure your sunglasses block 99-100% of all UV rays. We believe it’s important to your eye, especially as we age. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to growths, cataracts, and even macular degeneration. Studies show that without the proper protection, UV radiation can cause damage to our eyelids, corneas, and our eye lens along with a higher risk of developing skin cancers in and around the eye. Bonus, Ocean Waves Sunglasses polarized lenses also allow you to see deeper into the water than you can with your naked eyes or non-polarized sunglasses! Polarized glasses utilize a specialized filter that works to reduce this intense focus of light, therefore, reducing glare. This glare can do some serious damage to your eyes. Instead of being scattered in all kinds of directions, light reflecting off water travels in a more horizontal direction creating glare. When you’re on the water you get a double dose of ultraviolet rays, because they are intensified as they are reflected off the water’s surface. Regardless of whether you’re fishing or boating, picking the right pair of sunglasses is important to reduce eye strain. Imagine That!!! The need for sleep (process S) accumulates across the day, peaks just before bedtime at night and dissipates throughout the night. Process S is the homeostatic drive for sleep. The sleep-wake system is thought to be regulated by the interplay of two major processes, one that promotes sleep (process S) and one that maintains wakefulness (process C) ( Gillette and Abbott, 2005). Similarly, the arousal response to respiratory resistance (for example, resistance in breathing in or out) is lowest in stage 3 and stage 4 sleep ( Douglas, 2005). The hypoxic ventilatory response is also lower in NREM sleep than during wakefulness and decreases further during REM sleep. The cough reflex, which normally reacts to irritants in the airway, is suppressed during REM and NREM sleep. More generally, ventilation and respiratory flow show less effective adaptive responses dur ing sleep. Further, during REM sleep, there is reduced rib cage movement and increased upper airway resistance due to the loss of tone in the intercostals and upper airway muscles ( Parker and Dunbar, 2005). Several factors contribute to hypoventilation during NREM, and possibly REM, sleep such as reduced pharyngeal muscle tone ( Krieger, 2000 Simon et al., 2002). Ventilation data during REM sleep are somewhat unclear, but they suggest that hypoventilation (deficient ventilation of the lungs that results in reduction in the oxygen content or increase in the carbon dioxide content of the blood or both) occurs in a similar way as during NREM sleep ( NLM, 2006). Respiratory: Ventilation and respiratory flow change during sleep and become increasingly faster and more erratic, specifically during REM sleep ( Krieger, 2000 Simon et al., 2002). The chapter ends with a discussion about how sleep patterns change over an individual’s life span. Sleep and circadian-generating systems are also reviewed. This chapter provides an overview of basic sleep physiology and describes the characteristics of REM and NREM sleep. Although its function remains to be fully elucidated, sleep is a universal need of all higher life forms including humans, absence of which has serious physiological consequences. Humans spend about one-third of their lives asleep, yet most individuals know little about sleep. In addition, the sleep-wake system is thought to be regulated by the interplay of two major processes, one that promotes sleep and one that maintains wakefulness. Circadian rhythms, the daily rhythms in physiology and behavior, regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Each has unique characteristics including variations in brain wave patterns, eye movements, and muscle tone. NREM sleep is divided into stages 1, 2, 3, and 4, representing a continuum of relative depth. There are two types of sleep, non-rapid eye movement ( NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement ( REM) sleep. Humans spend about one-third of their lives asleep. CHAPTER SUMMARY This chapter provides a brief overview of sleep physiology and how sleep patterns change over an individual’s life span. Then apply the material so that it touches the backer and the surface edge of each log. It’s kind of like icing a cake: Hold the gun (or chinking bag if you’re not using a gun) firmly against the backer rod. Though a pro knows exactly what to do, it’s helpful if you, too, understand the process. You WILL get some on you and chinking is hard to wash out.) Proper Technique. (If this is a DIY project, wear old clothes and shoes. Then a bent trowel about the width of the chinking joint and a spray bottle filled with tap water are used to smooth the material without leaving marks. A bulk loading gun allows an even bead to be applied to the surface. The rod should fit snugly against the logs, about 1/4 to 3/8 inch behind the surface for square logs and far enough out to create a 1/4-inch bead on round logs (the actual depth depends on the diameter of the log itself). Back it Up.Ī backer rod is a foam strip, which rests between the gaps in the log courses so that the chinking has a surface to adhere to. Power washing may be necessary for log homes that have been standing for a number of years. Logs should be clean, dry and free of debris. (You may even try to do it yourself!) Shore Up the Surface. Here are six keys to chinking application that will last. Today’s chinking is comprised of flexible, elastic and long-lasting synthetic material, effectively sealing the space between log courses, even as the home settles over time - as long as it’s properly applied. In days of yore, chinking was made from a rigid concoction of mortar, mud, hay and stone - a mixture that notoriously crumbled and separated from the logs as it aged. The term is “chinking,” and for some log homes, chinking plays a vital role in its weathertightness while for others, it’s purely decorative. Log homes have a laid-back charm that’s undeniable, and one component that’s often singled out as a defining feature is the white bands of material between log courses, despite the fact that many people don’t know what it’s called. |
